Kula Foods Mini Interview

This month we’re introducing you to Asha Wheeldon, the maker behind Vancouver company Kula Foods, who brings us a line of plant-based foods combining vibrant flavours from her cultural heritage with locally-sourced ingredients. Through Kula, Asha is on a mission not only to deliver delicious, Afro-Vegan inspired nourishment, but also to unite people through food—fostering connections, and promoting wellness through events, partnerships, and education.

Kula was born when I found myself in a new city and hungry. I was born in Kenya and lived in Toronto for over 20 years where I was introduced to diverse food and culture from around the world. When I moved to Vancouver, I found myself looking for plant-based African and Caribbean food spaces that reminded me of home. I recognized the gap in grocery stores, restaurants, and farmers markets and was inspired to introduce the first Afrocentric plant-based brand. Kula, meaning "eat" in Kiswahili, was established in 2018 at various Vancouver Farmers Markets.

The journey from conceiving an idea to establishing a small business is a lot of work! When did it first sink in for you that ‘this is really happening’?

I was a new mom at the time I started Kula and was not entirely sure of the full plan, which is one of the reasons I chose to launch Kula at farmers markets to gather as much feedback as possible. 2020 was a pivotal moment in my entrepreneurial journey– it's when I came to realize that Kula was not just a project. Seeing the demand for access to food online, we activated our website and started to partner with local online and retail shops. We had a great opportunity to partner with Doordash on a national campaign with Fred Vanvleet! Seeing Kula featured in large platforms like Sportsnet was a proud moment that validated the work we continue to do and affirmed the impact we have within our community.

Out of all your products, which is your personal favourite and why?

This is tough to choose because each product is so unique. I would say Pili Pili sauce because it is one of the first products we launched and highlights sauces from my childhood. Also G.O.A.T Curry, the flavour is unmatched and really cuts the time down in preparing a curry dish.

What motivates you on a day-to-day basis?

I am motivated by the impact Kula has made and will make in the future. We are always looking for ways to offer nourishing food that also celebrates culture. As a mom of two, my children motivate me to keep thinking of the future and working through a value-aligned framework. I want them to have more access, equity and opportunities than I did.

What are your personal top three tips for feeling amazing?

I recommend movement. Dancing lifts my spirit and is my go to when I need a boost. Eat with folks that bring great energy to you, and try new food and experience new cultures, whether it's travelling to a new place or a new restaurant near you. If travel or restaurants are not accessible, try making a dish from a country you have not tried yet. You never know what you will discover!
